The Ardnamurchan “The Midgie” 2025 is the new annual release with which the young distillery of the Western Highlands playfully pays tribute to one of Scotland’s smallest yet most notorious inhabitants: the midge, that pesky insect every Highland hiker knows all too well.
This release is the result of a vatting of distillates produced between 2017 and 2019, matured in a mix of casks:
-
14 ex-bourbon barrels unpeated and 12 ex-bourbon barrels peated
-
25 ex-Port Ruby barriques (unpeated)
-
1 ex-sherry butt, partly matured in ex-bourbon (peated)
The outcome is a balanced and complex whisky, bottled at 48% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural colour, with a total outturn of 16,500 bottles.
To fully understand “The Midgie”, one must look at Ardnamurchan Distillery itself, one of the most exciting players in Scotland’s new whisky generation. Founded in 2014 by Adelphi, the renowned independent bottler, the distillery stands in one of the most remote corners of the Highlands, on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, near the village of Glenbeg. Here, everything is designed with sustainability in mind: energy is sourced from local hydroelectric power, heat comes from a biomass boiler fuelled by local wood, and the entire production philosophy is committed to respecting raw materials and the surrounding environment.

Colour: Amber gold.
Nose: An enveloping opening with notes of dark and red fruit – ripe cherries, stewed plums and strawberries – followed by tropical hints of ripe mango and syrupy pineapple. Layers of vanilla, crème brûlée and caramel add sweetness, while more unusual earthy tones emerge: resin, toasted oak, cedar hints, a coastal-mineral undertone and a delicate trace of fresh mint and cut grass.
Palate: Slightly oily, almost velvety, yet lively. The initial sweetness of strawberry and raspberry jam, vanilla cream and milk chocolate gives way to a spicier edge of white pepper, a flicker of chilli and touches of coriander. Mineral notes follow, with impressions of wet sand, damp stone and a tarry nuance. Digestive biscuits, dark honey and a gentle smoky touch unfold towards the finish.
Finish: Medium-long, with the red fruits returning elegantly alongside a light tannic astringency and fortified wine echoes. Creamy notes linger with reminders of cheesecake and panna, while the aftertaste reveals a subtle yet persistent smoky-oily vein, interwoven with mineral and toasted wood notes.
