Founded in 2004 by the charismatic Ichiro Akuto, the Chichibu distillery is located in a mountainous, forest‑rich area with significant temperature swings; in summer it can reach 30 °C, while in winter it easily drops below zero. These extremes naturally influence the whisky’s maturation, pushing the angel’s share to almost double that of Scotland and thus speeding up the aging process.
The construction of the new Chichibu distillery coincided exactly with the closure of Hanyu, but Ichiro seized the opportunity and purchased all available Hanyu casks.
The Ichiro’s Malt Wine Wood Reserve (WWR) is the name of the blended malt whisky series in which Ichiro signals that Hanyu single malts were used predominantly in the blend. The various single malts are married together and then finished for several months in French wine casks from the Charentes region. The result is a distinctive blended malt, bottled at 46.5% ABV, non‑chill‑filtered and at its natural color.
