Springbank’s Local Barley series is crafted exclusively with barley harvested from the Kintyre region, where the distillery is located. For this release, Bere barley was sourced from High Ranachan farm, located about 3 kilometers northeast of Campbeltown. The variety used is Belgravia.
The Springbank 8 Years Old Local Barley is a lightly peated single malt Scotch whisky, distilled in July 2016 using Bere barley and aged for 8 years in a mix of casks: 50% ex-sherry and 50% ex-bourbon. It was bottled in December 2024 at its natural strength of 58.1% ABV, without chill filtration and with no added coloring. The total outturn is 13,500 bottles.

Aroma: The peat notes blend with barley malt, white pepper, and charred wood, accompanied by a maritime salinity, somewhere between olive brine and hints of seaweed. Sulphury nuances emerge alongside fruit, with a touch of ripe red berries and sweet tobacco.
Palate: Nicely oily, with salted caramel and tropical fruit (papaya) interwoven with medicinal notes and dark chocolate. The smoke is present but well integrated, showing hints of ash, pepper, and dry tannins.
Finish: Fairly long, with notes of bitter chocolate, tobacco, barley malt, and lemon, leading into a sulphury aftertaste and hints of sweet malt.
