Big Peat is one of the most iconic names in the world of peated blended malts. Born from the independent vision of Douglas Laing, this whisky brings together some of the most characteristic single malts from the island of Islay, creating an expression that embodies everything enthusiasts love about Scottish peat: intense smoke, salty sea air and ash.
The Winter Edition 2025 marks a new chapter: for the first time, Big Peat is finished in Madeira wine casks, a choice that adds depth and aromatics to that smoky, maritime profile that made it famous. It is a seasonal release, designed for the colder months, when the contrast between the enveloping sweetness of fortified wine and the gripping peat of Islay finds its perfect season.
The Big Peat Winter Edition 2025 is a peated blended malt aged primarily in ex-bourbon oak casks before being finished for several months in former Madeira fortified wine barrels. This whisky is then bottled at cask strength (53.6% vol), non-chill filtered and with no added colouring.

Colour: Deep gold with amber highlights.
Nose: An immediate burst of peat smoke, fireplace ash and sea air, followed by notes of sweet malt, vanilla and salted caramel. Hints of candied citrus, molasses and a light vinous warmth brought by the Madeira finish follow.
Taste: Rich on the palate, with notes of molasses, crème brûlée, burnt orange peel and a sweet-spicy vein from the fortified wine. Smoke, coal and damp earth remain prominent, but integrate with a smoother sweetness compared to the classic Big Peat profile.
Finish: Long, warm and smoky. Salty peat, citrus, sea salt and a hint of burnt wood return. The Madeira adds a final touch of fruity sweetness that balances the intense and typically Islay finish.
