The Laphroaig distillery was founded in 1815 by the brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the southern coast of Islay. It is one of the island’s most famous and iconic distilleries, renowned worldwide for its heavily peated, medicinal and maritime style. For much of its history it remained in the hands of the Johnston family before coming under the control of various international groups; today it is owned by Beam Suntory. The name Laphroaig comes from Gaelic and means “the beautiful hollow on the hillside”, referring to the distillery’s location.
The Laphroaig 12 Years Old is a peated single malt Scotch whisky, originally created exclusively for the Travel Retail channel (duty free and airports). Matured for 12 years exclusively in carefully selected American ex-bourbon oak casks, it is bottled at the classic strength of 46% vol., with natural colour and without chill filtration.
