The Rosendale mine supplied stone for the construction of some of New York's most iconic landmarks, such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. In 1970, the depleted mine was closed, and A.J. Snyder, its former owner, retired from public life. Snyder was known to be a harsh, rough, and cruel man, but his wife Jane was fortunately a kind and pure woman, a beacon for the Rosendale community. When Snyder died and the mine passed into his wife’s hands, it became known to everyone as the “Widow Jane Mine”. Today, the Widow Jane distillery pays tribute to Widow Jane and uses only the pure, mineral-rich water that filters through the limestone rocks of the mine for its whiskies.
The Widow Jane Rye Mash is a rye whiskey made with a mash bill rich in rye and aged in new American white oak barrels. This whiskey was distilled in Kentucky and aged at the Red Hook distillery, located 105 miles north of New York City. It is produced in small batches and bottled at 91 proof (45.5% ABV).
Note: Any sediment at the bottom of the bottle is due to the particularly calcareous mineral water used and the fact that this whiskey is non-chill filtered.
