The Morrison family’s connection with Scotch whisky dates back to the early twentieth century, when Stanley P. Morrison started a whisky brokering business in Glasgow. The move into direct production came in 1963 with the acquisition of Bowmore distillery, followed by Glen Garioch in 1970 and Auchentoshan in 1984, until the sale of the group to Suntory in 1994.
After some years dedicated to selecting and bottling whiskies for their own brands, the family turned its attention back to single malt production. In June 2016, the foundation stone of the new distillery was laid at the Aberargie farm, owned by the Morrisons. After the preliminary trials were completed, the first cask was filled on November 1, 2017, officially marking the family’s return to distillation, now in its fifth generation.
The Aberargie Inaugural Release is a “barley-to-bottle” single malt Scotch whisky entirely produced on the Morrison estate in Perthshire, on the border between the Highlands and the Lowlands. Distilled in 2017, it is made from Golden Promise barley (52%) and Laureate (48%), grown exclusively on the family farm following a single-estate approach. It is matured in first-fill ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before being bottled at 48.2% vol., without chill filtration and without added colouring.
