Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, a central figure in the birth of Japanese whisky. The Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido is the starting point of the project: here they still use direct coal-fired distillation and a tradition of peated malts that has made Nikka’s spirit famous. Frontier was conceived precisely to evoke Taketsuru’s “frontier spirit” — the spirit of someone who dared to create something new in a then-unknown context.
The Nikka Frontier is a lightly peated blended Japanese whisky made with more than 51% single malt, the main component being Yoichi’s peated malt. Alongside it are other malts (including contributions from Miyagikyo and from Ben Nevis, the Scottish distillery owned by Nikka) and grain whisky. The blend is aged in selected oak casks and bottled at 48% vol., without chill filtration.

Colour: Intense gold with amber reflections.
Aroma: Fruity and full. It opens on notes of citrus marmalade and orange, with malty character notes and a delicate yet present smokiness. Baked apple, light honey and a spicy wood undertone also emerge.
Taste: Soft yet well-structured. The sweetness of ripe fruit and vanilla is balanced by a light peat bitterness and spice notes (white pepper and ginger), with toasted cereal nuances.
Finish: Medium length, warm and spicy, with a return of light smokiness and a sweet residual of oak.
