Ardbeg

Scotland, on the southern coast of the island of Islay, is home to Ardbeg. This wild land, once known for its illicit distilleries and smugglers' hideouts, provides the perfect setting for one of Scotland's most iconic distilleries.

Founded in 1815 by John McDougall, the history of the distillery has been marked by numerous ownership changes and periods of closure. As early as 1835, ownership passed to Thomas Buchanan, a merchant from Glasgow, although John McDougall and his son continued to manage the business. By 1877, nearly one-third of the entire population of Islay was employed by the distillery. During those years, annual production exceeded one million litres—an impressive achievement for a relatively small operation.

Unfortunately, in 1981, due to the economic downturn that began in the late 1970s, Ardbeg—whose production was primarily destined for the blended whisky market—was forced to cease operations. Acquired by Hiram Walker in 1987, production resumed only in October 1989 after Walker's distilleries became part of Allied Distillers, albeit on a very limited scale. The distillery closed again in 1991, but in February 1997 Ardbeg was purchased by Glenmorangie, which invested nearly £10 million in its acquisition and modernization. Today, Ardbeg is regarded as one of the world's most innovative distilleries, renowned not only for its exceptional whisky but also for its creative marketing and distinctive brand identity.

Today, Ardbeg produces outstanding Single Malt whiskies distinguished by the harmonious balance between the salty influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the bold character of Islay peat. Every bottle captures the untamed spirit of Islay and its rugged coastline.

Did you know? The use of peat to dry the malt, together with the pure water drawn from the lochs of Arigh Nam Beist and Uigeadail, gives Ardbeg its unmistakable character, with rich aromas of peat smoke, sea salt, seaweed and oak.

If you're visiting Islay and would like to tour the distillery and sample its single malts, we highly recommend booking the 10:30 a.m. tour. In addition to the distillery visit, it includes a tasting of five different whiskies—an experience not to be missed!
