The history of Clynelish begins in 1819, when the Marquess of Stafford has a distillery built at Brora, on the Sutherland coast in the northern Highlands. In 1967 the new plant is constructed next to it — the one we know today as the current Clynelish — while the original site takes the name Brora again.
What makes Clynelish recognisable is the texture: that waxy note that no other distillery truly reproduces. It comes from long fermentations, cloudy worts and a distillation cut that brings the heavier compounds into the heart as well.
Finn Thomson is the ninth generation of a Perthshire family that has revolved around whisky for three centuries, from the illicit stills on the banks of the River Tay to the shop that great-grandfather Peter opened in Perth in 1908. In 1922, upon learning of the construction of the nearby Gleneagles Hotel, Peter renamed the house blend Golden Beneagles — a name chosen to link it to what would become the most exclusive address in the area.
The Clynelish 2013 12 Years Old Finn Thomson is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky, distilled on 18 September 2013 and matured in a single refill hogshead (#322265), before being bottled on 14 January 2026 at its natural strength of 55.3% vol. without chill filtration and without the addition of colouring, in 277 bottles.

Nose: On the nose the wood remains in the background and lets the distillery speak, with its waxy note and a fresh, citrusy profile.
Palate: On the palate the texture is the central point, oily and enveloping, with the wax accompanying the citrus and the full strength giving drive.
Finish: Of good persistence, with notes of vanilla, toasted cereals, ginger and the return of the typical waxy character of the distillery.
