Aultmore was founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward, already owner of Benrinnes and one of the founders of Craigellachie, just outside Keith in Moray. Since 1923 it has been owned by John Dewar & Sons, today part of the Bacardi group, and the majority of its production goes into the Dewar’s blends. As a single malt its releases were rare until 2014, when it was added to the “The Last Great Malts” range, but it remains a distillery far better known to independent bottlers than to the general public. Its spirit is light, herbaceous and clean.
Finn Thomson is an independent bottler based in Perthshire. He arrived on the market in the early 2020s, but behind him stands a family with three centuries of history in whisky. His ancestor James Thomson, born in 1713, was already distilling in secret after working in the fields.
This Aultmore is the second in a series with Torres cask finishes and stems from a long relationship between families: Finn’s grandfather began working with the Torres family in the late 1960s, later becoming their exclusive agent in Scotland during the 1970s and 1980s. Fifty years on, the collaboration continues in the casks.
The Aultmore 2013 11 Years Old Finn Thomson is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, distilled in 2013 and finished in a Torres red wine cask (#300427), before being bottled in 2024 at its natural strength of 54.8% without chill filtration and at its natural colour, in only 310 bottles.

Color: Gold with rosy reflections generated by the wine finish.
Nose: The imprint of the wine arrives immediately on the nose, with notes of red fruits and a slightly tannic vein. Underneath remains the style of the distillery, herbaceous and fresh.
Palate: On the palate the full strength makes itself felt; we have notes of red fruit and a well-present tannic structure, with the light character of Aultmore emerging in the background. A few drops of water help to open it up.
Finish: Of good persistence, dry, with the tannins of the wine wood and a return of red fruits.
