Located in Speyside near the Teindland forest, the BenRiach distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff, one of the most famous Scottish distillers. Duff began his career around 1860 managing the Glendronach distillery, and in 1876 he founded Glenlossie with two other partners. After 10 years, John left Glenlossie to move to South Africa, where he spent years trying to build a new distillery. Failing in that endeavor, he moved to Kentucky, again trying to build a new one without success. After years of failed attempts, John Duff returned to Scotland and founded Longmorn distillery in 1894, and later BenRiach.
The Benriach 12 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky distilled on January 25, 2012, and aged in an ex-bourbon cask before being finished for at least 6 months in a Tawny ex-Port wine barrique. This whisky was finally bottled at its natural strength (51.2%), non-chill filtered, and with no added colouring in a total of 331 bottles.

Color: Yellow with orange highlights.
Nose: There is a sweet harmony between the ex-bourbon cask and the ex-Port, with notes of dried fruit, hazelnuts, figs, dates; then waxy fruit tones, hazelnut cream, and milk chocolate emerge. Later, hints of leather and sweet tobacco enrich the bouquet, accompanied by subtle notes of burnt caramel and orange peel.
Palate: Good body, enveloping, with qualities of blackberry jam, dark chocolate with toasted hazelnuts, sweet cream, dark fruit, aromatic tobacco, and a hint of aromatic wood.
Finish: Medium length, dominated by dark chocolate, chased by toasted nuts, dark red fruits, and light citrus notes. The sweet tobacco aftertaste is elegant and never intrusive, while a subtle balsamic accent closes everything with refinement.
