The distillery is located in the northern part of Islay, likely one of the most scenic spots on the island, overlooking the narrow stretch of sea known as the “Sound of Islay,” which separates Islay from Jura. Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, today the distillery is the largest on the island, yet despite its size, its peated whiskies consistently maintain high quality—so much so that it has earned the nickname “Mr. Consistent.”

The Caol Ila 10 Years Old is a peated single malt Scotch whisky distilled by Caol Ila on May 23rd, 2013, and aged for 10 years in a single STR hogshead cask, before being bottled at cask strength (58.3% ABV), non-chill filtered and with no added color, in a total of 293 bottles.

Color: Gold with amber highlights.

Aroma: The opening is dominated by an intense wave of smoky peat, reminiscent of campfires and burnt wood. This is followed by coastal nuances of brine and dried seaweed, typical of the island style, alongside notes of dried fruit, burnt caramel, and cherry compote. With oxygenation, sweeter and more delicate tones of vanilla, green apple, and citrus emerge, beautifully balancing the smoky profile.

Palate: Full-bodied, intense, and layered. Peat smoke takes center stage, boldly coating the palate. Dark chocolate, dried fruits, and a refined hint of warm spices—cinnamon and nutmeg—quickly follow. Notes of cherry compote are enriched by undertones of red fruits and toasted wood. The STR cask maturation (shaved, toasted, re-charred) adds a refined oak spiciness and integrated sweetness.

Finish: Long and persistent. The smoke gradually fades, giving way to a dry finish. Notes of dried fruit, bitter chocolate, and a light lemony touch refresh the final sip. The whole experience closes with a mineral and slightly bitter note, reminiscent of a spent ashtray.
