The Bruichladdich distillery produces various types of single malts, both peated and unpeated, and if you’re a fan or follow the distillery, you may have heard of Rhinns. This particular single malt is normally released by the distillery during the island’s annual festival, Feis Ile, and always in limited edition. What sets it apart from others? The “Rhinns” has a lower peat level than Port Charlotte and Octomore—sitting at 30ppm—and is generally distilled only once a year.
The Bruichladdich Rhinns 12 Years Old is a peated single malt Scotch whisky distilled on November 2, 2011, and aged in a classic oak cask before being finished for at least 6 months in a single first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry barrique. This whisky was bottled at cask strength (53.7% ABV), non-chill filtered, and with no added colouring, in a total of 148 bottles.

Nose: On the nose, we’re greeted by coastal Islay smoke—smoked herring, salty smoke, barbecued meat, burnt seaweed, toffee and caramel, with a light hint of charcoal.
Palate: On the palate, there’s a beautiful contrast between sweet and salty notes: seaweed, smoked herring, brined olives, caramel, milk chocolate, lemon zest, and plenty of peat smoke.
Finish: Long-lasting and vibrant thanks to the high ABV, with notes of barbecued meat, blackberry jam, black pepper, charred oak, and maritime smoke.
